Marvin Gaye is one of my favourite musicians. His music is brilliant and soulful. He is most well-known for songs like I Heard it Through the Grapevine, Let's Get it On, What's Going On, and Sexual Healing; but there is so much more. Over the years I've explored his discography and come to discover my favourite tracks and albums. That is what I'm sharing here.
During the 1960s, Marvin was a great influencer in shaping the sound of Motown Records. Marvin was killed by his father in 1984, but the legacy lives on.
"'Cause music's been my therapy
Taking the pain from all my anatomy"
That's how I feel about music.
The first Marvin Gaye song I fell in love with was What's Going On.
Everybody thinks we're wrong
But who are they to judge us
simply 'cause our hair is long?
You know we've got to find a way
to bring some understanding here today...
Don't punish me with brutality,
talk to me so you can see
What's Going On..."
Other tracks from the What's Going On album:
Marvin and Tammi topped the charts.
Jazz and swing classics:
The album Here, My Dear tells the story of a relationship gone wrong (a dedication to his first wife Anna Gordy Gaye).
"Dear did you notice the snow started to fall?
Come let us sit a while
Just listen to the children laughing and running wild...
I knew all the time that I'd find the rhyme
Never have a fear,
Here it is, my dear."
It's Madness is one of my more recent discoveries. The lyrics hit home as I was going through a depressive episode.
Life's Opera, along with It's Madness, were released on the Dream of a Lifetime posthumous album.
Another album I love is I Want You, but I can also say that I enjoyed every Marvin Gaye album that I've played over the years. Some I repeat for weeks, sometimes months.
